Jeep debuted its Cherokee in 2014, and since then, the vehicle has been a well-loved member of the Jeep family. For 2019, it will see several exciting updates that will make it even more sought after by both crossover lovers and off-road enthusiasts. New Engine Perhaps the most exciting news for the 2019 Cherokee is that Jeep has added a new engine option to the mix — a 2.0-liter turbo-four that offers a powerful 270 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, making it the fastest in the lineup. The standard engine on most trims is the 3.2-liter V-6, which puts out a respectable 271 horsepower and 239 pound-feet of torque. Jeep recently announced its plans to release an electric Jeep Wrangler in 2020. Here's what we know so far. more It Will Be a Plug-In Hybrid While at the 2017 L.A. Auto Show, Jeep CEO Mike Manley announced at a press conference that Jeep will be releasing a Jeep Wrangler in 2020 that will  have an available plug-in option. While the specifics about the powertrain are still being worked out, it is clear that there will be a hybrid available on Wrangler models in 2020. Manley explained that Jeep is committed to offering a Wrangler that is both environmentally friendly and fun to drive. It's Different than the 2018 Jeep Wrangler This announcement came at the same time as the reveal of the new 2018 Jeep Wrangler. This is the first time in several years that Jeep has redesigned their Wrangler. The 2018 Jeep Wrangler has been released with a hybrid system that includes a 48-volt mild hybrid enhance start-stop system alongside the 2.0-liter turbo-4 engine. Jeep has stated that the 2020 Wrangler will be made with a different hybrid engine that you will fully be able to plug in and charge up. This would be Jeep's first plug-in hybrid they've ever put into production despite showing concept models like this for almost a decade. Jeep Will Look to Chrysler for the Powertrain It is likely that Jeep will use a powertrain similar to the Fiat Chrysler in-house two-motor hybrid system which is currently found in the Chrysler Pacifica hybrid. This is a specially-tuned 3.6-liter V-6 that is paired with a hybrid system. It is mounted transversely and uses front wheel drive. However, this mounting wouldn't work for the Wrangler because this model does not plug in like the 2020 Wrangler. If they plan to use this powertrain while also making it a plug-in hybrid, the engine will have to be longitudinally mounted and they'll have to offer the model in four-wheel-drive. The location of the battery is still being debated. There is a rumor that it could go between the rails, but because the hybrid battery is larger than a conventional model, mounting it there might interfere with the rear drive shaft and change the entire setup of the four-wheel-drive system. There's Still Much Unknown Much of the information that is floating around about the new 2020 Jeep Wrangler hybrid is speculation. Mike Manley gave very little away during the press conference and subsequent interview with Motor Authority. It is still unclear whether this Jeep hybrid will be available nationwide or if it will only be released in certain markets. It is unknown how the four-wheel-drive system will work or where the battery will be placed. While making his announcement, Manley spoke confidently about how Jeep has been planning this for a long time and that this Wrangler is a vehicle made for the future. The launch of the next-generation Jeep Wrangler is one of the most anticipated of the year. There is little official information about the next-generation Wrangler, but we can expect a lighter and more efficient model to meet impending regulations in the United States and abroad. Die-hard fans, who would no-doubt be happy if the Jeep didn't change at all, will celebrate early reports that the Wrangler won't be ditching the brand's heritage character. The dashboard is still broad and flat, with the trademark seven-slot grille and circular air vents. The steering wheel retains its retro-inspired, three-spoke design. The headlights are still round, and the fenders flared. While the overall silhouette and proportions haven't changed, there have been some subtle modifications to the details, as well as a much-needed upgrade of the current, low-tech interior. There are also improvements to the overall quality of materials, finish, and trim. Here are five of the more significant changes to the Jeep Wrangler that you can expect to see in 2018. more Subtle Details Perhaps the most notable changes from the current-generation Wrangler are in the front and rear details. The turn signals are now on the fenders, rather than the grille — harking back to earlier, open-top Jeeps — and the windshield has a new, rakish design. At the rear, you will still find a flip-up window and side-opening tailgate, and the large rectangular windows remain a prominent feature. However, the back is tidier and trimmer, with new, wraparound taillights. Under the Hood The new Wrangler is expected to inaugurate a turbocharged 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine. The upgrade may even offer six different engine options: l Two versions of the 3.6-liter Pentastar engine l A 3.0- and a 2.2-liter diesel l Two versions of the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine A Lighter Platform The chassis won't be straying from the Wrangler's traditional design. However, according to a supplier memo leaked to the press last fall, the hood and the doors will now be made out of aluminum to minimize overall weight. It is also rumored that the Wrangler's removable top might be replaced by a more manageable series of individual panels that you can store onboard. Optional power-operated soft top and hardtop glass panel roofs are also anticipated. New Bells and Whistles The appearance of new button controls confirms a number of new functional features and options, including heated seats and steering wheel, parking sensor, a navigation system, engine stop/start functionality, push-button start, and a rear backup camera. Infotainment Expect the inclusion of the new standard in connectivity items, including Bluetooth smartphone, touch-screen Apple CarPlay and Android Auto interfaces. The 2018 Wrangler will also feature the current fourth-generation Uconnect system with three available screen sizes: 5, 7, and 8.4 inches.
